Nowicki Pair Leads W Hockey To First Win

11/14/2015 5:29:00 PM

Box Score Jaimee Nowicki's timing could not have been better. For that matter, the same could be said for Jessica Cole.

Nowicki broke a 2-all tie in the second period and then added an empty netter for her first two goals of the season to lift the Hamline women's hockey team -- and head coach Natalie Darwitz -- to their first win of the season, 4-2 over St. Olaf in Northfield Saturday.

Nowicki, a sophomore from Woodbury, Minn., converted a pass from Megan Lawry at 8:55 to snap a 2-all tie and put Hamline ahead for good. Jessica Goldberg, whose late goal the night before had earned Hamline a 4-4 tie, had tied the game just 55 seconds earlier with her team high fourth of the season.

The Pipers had taken a 1-0 first period lead on Chelsea Koehn's first goal of the season. Koehn moved into ninth place among HU women's pucksters with 53 career points. The Oles scored in the last minute of the first period and grabbed another 2;29 into the middle frame. But that was all Cole, making her first startof the season in goal, would allow.. The sophomore, who had played the final 11 minutes of the game on Friday without surrendering a goal, knocked away 22 shots, including 10 in the third period as the Oles gunned for the tie.

Nowicki finally settled matters with an empty netter at 19:14. Brede Postier (who had five points on the weekend) and Jena Kosley had two assists apiece for HU, which now stands 1-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in MIAC play.

The Pipers return to action next Friday, November 20 against St. Benedict at Oscar Johnson Arena. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
