Smith Sets Second Career High In A Week

Box Score Zach Smith concluded one terrific week of basketball with his second career high scoring effort in a week. The sophomore guard poured in 31 points as the Piper men hoopsters took Gustavus Adolphus to the wire before dropping a 101-91 decision in overtime Saturday in St. Peter.  It capped a week that saw him net a new personal standard with 30 points on Monday against Carleton and 25 more against Concordia last Wednesday.

HU shot 54.1 per cent from the field (33-61) and led by as many as 20 points in the second half before the Gusties rallied to force the overtime. 

Quinton Garvis scored 13 points with Connor Knutson and Isaac Brooks adding 10 each.  Bret Lukes had a game high six assists for Hamline (4-19, 2-16 MIAC). 

Smith, scored five points and Knutson hit a three-pointer as the Pipers broke fast by7 scoring the game's first eight points. HU kept up the pressue, increasing their lead to 51-35 at halftime. The Gusties rallied to tie the game at 74 with 3;19 left. Hamline scored the next six points for an 80-74 advantage but the Gusties fought back to tie the game at 83 after regulation time. 

Brooks opened the overtime with a jumper in the paint. Gustavus scored the next seven points and held off the Pipers from there for the win.

Hamline returns to action Wednesday at St. Mary's and wraps up the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 20 against  Bethel at Hutton Arena.
