The final score -- 6-3 -- was deceptive because the last two goals came in an empty net,
The Hamline men's hockey team gave first place Augsburg all they could handle for nearly 59 minutes before eventually giving way Friday night at TRIA Rink.Â
HU rallied from a pair of one goal deficits to twice tie the game and stayed within a goal for most of the third period but couldn't get the equalizer and fell to 2-10-1 overall, 2-5-0 in the MIAC.Â
After Augsburg took a first period lead,
Austin Wisely evened the score, taking a nice pass from
Mitch McPherson. In the second period, Augsburg regained the lead on a power play goal only to see
Tyler Nyman get that one back to forge a 2-2 deadlock. The Auggies then connected twice in 34 seconds midway in the period for a 4-2 edge after two.
Bailey Martin (6) got the third period off to a roaring start, finishing off a three way play with
Kyle Wendorf and
Taylor Trapp just 58 seconds into the session. HU pressed but eventually had to pull goalie
Sam Nelson for a sixth attacker. The Auggies took advantage for two goals to make the game seem more lopsided than it really was.Â
Hamline will look to make amends Saturday, January 5 when they head across the river for a rematch at Augsburg Arena. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
