There were heroes aplenty last Friday when Hamline rallied from a two set deficit to upend Gustavus Adolphus, 3-2, at Hutton Arena. Michelle Mattke's contributions to that win were huge.
The Owatonna, MN junior led all HU attackers with a season high dozen kills. She added 11 digs, giving her a double-double for the third time this season. Her four service aces were also a season high. As it developed, two of them came on consecutive serves in the deciding fifth set. After dropping the first two by 11-25 and 23-25, HU took a pair of 25-22 affairs to go to a fifth set for just the second time this season.Â
HU had rallied from an early deficit to forge a 9-8 advantage. Mattke then unleashed her pair of aces and the Pipers never looked back, recording a 15-11 triumph.Â
Hamline, now 11-3 over all (3-1 MIAC) has a pair of key conference matches this week. On Wednesday, Oct. 8, they are at Macalester. They turn around quickly to start Homecomning Weekend on Friday, October 10 against Augsburg at Hutton Arena. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m.
