Hopefully, this is a prelude to the 2016 season. HU women's tennis senior Elizabeth Hughes had a big effort at the annual ITA/Gustavus Invite last weekend in St. Peter, Minn. The North St. Paul, Minn. native won a pair of matches before falling the semifinals of her draw.
Perhaps ever more impressively, she smote a pair of MIAC foes along the way.
It started with a 9-7 pro set win over Concordia's Jade Haseltine. Her second round match against Gustavus Adolphus' Sarah Link didn't atrt well with a 6-4 first set loss. Hughes, however, shook it off for a solid 6-2 win and then capped things with a 10-4 triumph. "Elizabeth played very well last weekend," said head coach Jon Henning. "I don't remember our last win against a Gustie."
Hughes and the women's tennis team takes a break now. The 2016 season starts in February.
