Relief pitchers in college baseball are often anonymous creatures. Aaron Stoneberg is a notable exception to the rule. The junior leads the MIAC in wins with five -- all in relief. He picked up a pair of decisions last week as the Pipers won three of four MIAC games and improved to 4-2 in the conference.
Last Wednesday, Stoneberg chilled Macalester's bats with four innings of no run, two hit, four strikeout work. His teammates rallied him through, coming up with four fifth inning runs for a 6-2 win.
On Sunday, Stoneberg came to rescue of starter Alex Bauermeister. Three errors in the fourth inning had helped Gustavus to a 3-0 lead. The righty stemmed the tide, blanking the Gusties the rest of the way, including a 1-2-3 seventh inning in a 4-3 win.
For the season, the Hastings, Minn. native is now 5-0 with a save and a snappy 2.73 ERA. Despite not starting any games, he is second on the staff in innings worked with 26.1.
The Pipers, 14-8 overall, play St. Mary's Tuesday at CHS Field in a doubleheader that begins at 2:30 p.m. After that, Hamline gets a wel deserved eight day rest before facing Bethel April 20.
