It is safe to assume that Hamline 2B Andy Sammon will remember his final baseball games against Bethel for some time to come. The senior had a memorable day, going 7-for-8 as the Pipers split a pair of freewheeling games. It was part of a wild week for Sammon, who hit a crisp .516 (9-for-16).
Against the Royals, Sammon was 3-for-3 in the opener, driving in a run and scoring one in a 10-3 loss. Turns out the Cottage Grove, Minn. native was just getting warmed up. In Game 2, he went 4-for-5, scored twice and drove in three runs as HU outlasted the Royals, 13-9. The last of those four hits was a two RBI single in the last of the eighth inning that blunted a BU combeack and helped Hamline clinch the win.
Last Saturday, he went hitless in the first game at Concordia, but then singled twice and scored twice in a 12-3 win. In addition, he was flawless in the field, handling 19 chances perfectly, including being part of five double plays.
The basebal team stans 8-4 in MIAC play (18-10 overall) and hosts St. Olaf Tuesday (2:30 p.m.) and Wis-Superior (4:00 p.m.) Thursday at CHS Field. On Sunday, May 1, they play at Augsburg.
