The job of the leadoff man in the batting order is to get on base. Jacob Picht did that quite well for the Hamline baseball team last Tuesday against St. John's at CHS Field. The senior whacked out six hits for the Pipers in their 4-3 and 8-6 losses to the Johnnies. The impressive display raised his averaged 35 points to .368, the highest it has been since the second game of the season.Â
In the opener, Picht popped out in his first at-bat. In his next trip to the plate, he singled and scored on Collin Olstad's three-RBI homer. He added a later single.
In the second game, he started the HU first with a laser that ricocheted off the SJU's pitcher leg to first base for an out. After that, he hit the ball where it couldn't be caught. His fourth inning singled scored two runs and started a comeback from a 6-1 deficit. In the sixth, he homered to tie the game. With HU down 8-6 in the ninth, he lined his fourth straight hit -- a single.Â
The Pipers, 10-16 overall (3-5 MIAC) get back in the swing of things Wednesday at Bethel (3:30 p.m.). They host Concordia Saturday at CHS Field in a 1:00 p.m. douibleheader.Â
