Perfection is a goal rarely achieved. However, Zach Smith did just that last Saturday for the Piper men's basketball team against Macalester at Hutton Arena. The senior guard threw in a career high 34 points, going 11-for-11 from the field and 8-for-8 from the free throw line as part of a school record for points in a game in a 118-96 victory.Â
The Burnsville, Minn. native was also on fire December 29 with a 31-point effort in a 73-71 win over No. 5 Williams in a tournament played in California. Smith, who is quickly moving up the charts in the school record book for career points, assists and free throws made, is now averaging 15.9 ppg this year, which ranks fifth in the MIAC. He ranks second in Assists with 52 and has the same lofty standing in 3-Point Percentage (60.0).Â
Smith and the Pipers have a pair of key MIAC encounters this week. Fortunately, both of them are at Hutton Arena. Bethel visits on Monday, January 8 and Carleton comes to town on Wednesday, January 10. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m.
