Nolan Schoonveld quickly warmed up the baseball climate in Tucson, Arizona. The junior tossed five innings of one run, two hit ball to be the winning pitcher in the team's first game on a weeklong stay in the desert, a 5-2 decision over Dubuque, March 16. He had a hit in that game and duplicated that feat in a doubleheader against Greenville and Wesleyan the next day to push his hitting streak to nine games to start the season.Â
The twin threat has been front and center for the baseballers, who take a 3-6 record into a March 19 game with Oberlin.Â
Schoonveld leads the Pipers at the plate with a .357 batting average (10-for-28). At the plate, he has been at his best with runners in scoring position (a .417 mark). On the mound, the righthander is 2-0 with a microscopic 0.82 ERA. Schoonveld has stifled lefthanded hitters so far, holding them to one hit in 13 tries.
When not hurling, the Middleton, Wis. native can be found at first base where he has handled 55 plays flawlessly. Schoonveld have five more games this week in Arizona -- more time to improve on some gaudy numbers.Â
