Leah Schwartzman came out gunning last Thursday with a goal and three assists as the Hamline women's hockey team overwhelmed Saint Anselm, 6-2. As it turned out, the senior forward was just warming up.
She added seven more points on the weekend as the Pipers swept a series from St. Norbert, 6-2 and 6-0. Schwartzman had a goal and two assists in the first game and then went one better with another goal, three assist performance in the shutout win.
That added up to three goals and seven assists -- an impressive tally for three days of work. In the eyes of the coaches, however, this number may have even better: she was a +7 in the games. The MIASC took notice and also named here Women's Hockey Athlete of the Week.
For the season, Leah now has five goals and 11 assists. That places her tied for third on the team (and the MIAC).
Hamline, 11-1-1 overall and ranked No. 7 in the d3hockey.com Top Ten poll (No. 8 on USCHO.com), is tied for third place in the conference with a 5-1-0 mark. The Pipers return to the MIAC wars this weekend with a pair of games against Augsburg. Friday's game is in Minneapolis (7:00 p.m.). The rematch is the next day at TRIA Rink in St. Paul at 1:30 p.m.
