Mary-Clare Couillard came out swinging in her first confernence games ever. The freshman second baseman rapped out five hits and knocked in a pair of runs as the Piper softballteam got off to a good start with 4-2 and 6-5 wins at Augsburg, April 4.
The St. Anthony Village grad had a RBi single and scored a run in the four-run first inning that cliched the first game. In the second game, she had four hits, including a RBI double off the center field fence and a pair of bunt singles.
She finished the night 5-for-7, pushing her batting average to a team leading .447.
She also played a perfect field, handling all six chances sent her way for the evening.
If the weather gods agree, Couillard and the Pipers figure to be busy this week with doubleheaders at St. Thomas, at home against St. Catherine and at Macalester. HU is 7-8-1 overall, 2-0 in the MIAC.
