Men's Hockey Rallies For Tie

1/25/2013 10:58:00 PM

Box Score Some ties mean more than others. Tyler Johnson's wicked shot through a screen with 56 seconds left in the third period lifted the Hamline men's hockey team to a 1-1 OT tie with St. John's in Vadnais Heights.

It marked the third straight tie for the Pipers, the most in Division III. It also marked the second straight game where HU rallied in the third period.

For a long time, it looked like it would be a frustrating night. In the second period, Hamline had a two-man advantage when they were hit with back-to-back too many men on the ice penalties. Now down two men, they allowed the only SJU goal of the night at 6:06.

The gakme stayed stuck at 1-0 until the final minute of play. With the faceoff deep in the SJU end, Hamline goalie Matt Hemingway (who once again played very well with 29 saves) was pulled for a sixth attacker.

Zach Johnson won the faceoff cleanly. The puck nicked Chris Hoffman on the way back to Tyler Johnson, who blistered a low bullet into the net.

In the OT, both teams had chances but Hemingway and SJU goalie Saxton Soley remained firm.

Hamline is now 1-14-5 overall, 1-7-3 in the MIAC. The teams play again Saturday at the National Sports Center in St. Cloud. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
