Piper Women Run Past Tommies

Box Score From the start, it was clear that Hamline's women's basketball team was on its game Saturday against No. 12 St. Thomas. With the exception of a brief moment in the second half, they stayed on their game, snapping the Tommies' 23-game home court winning streak with a solid 66-56 decision at Anderson Center.

The Piper backcourt led the offensive charge as Kara Poirier scored 16 points and Je'Naya Brown added 14. The pair also has six rebounds apiece. After being held without a point in the first half, Steph Pilgrim delivered a dozen markers (including 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the late stages). Jordan Sammons recorded her eighth double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Pilgrim and Sammons remain No. 1-2 in the MIAC scoring derby. Pilgrim is averaging 15.8 points per game Sammons is at 15.5.

The Pipers moved to 8-7 in MIAC play with the impressive, keeping pace with St. Olaf for the sixth and final playoff spot.

Hamline shot out of the gate fast, leading by as many as 11 points before settling for a 30-27 intermission edge. The Tommies recovered to take a brief 38-36 lead only to see the Pipers to see snap up the next 13 points for a 49-38 lead and never look back.

Down the stretch, they connected on seven of eight free throws to seal the decision.

The Pipers outrebounded the taller Tommies by a whopping 46-34 edge. They held UST to just 34.6 shooting from the field.

HU returns to action Wednesday, January 30 at Macalester (7:30 p.m.). Gustavus Adolphus is at Hutton Arena next Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
