Box Score Jordan Sammons had a terrific encore.
Erika Moede made her presence felt in a big way. However, Hamline's women's BB team lost the battle of the free throw line, 75-66, at Gustavus Adolphus Wednesday night in the conference opener for both teams.
Sammons followed up her 35 point opening night effort with a 30-point, 12 rebound performance. Moede, a freshman, came off the bench to play 34 minutes to score 10 points, added six rebounds and picked up a pair of steals.
For about 35 minutes, it looked like this would be enough to pull Hamline through. HU had worked its way to a 60-58 lead but the Gusties went back ahead 64-60. The Piper's came right back with Sammons' layup tying the game at 64 with 2:27 left in the game. That's when the Gusties started a parade to the free throw line that decided.
GAC hit nine of 10 free throws (and one basket) in the final 2:05 to drop Hamline to 0-2 overall on the season. For the night, GAC was 25-for-38 from the line while Hamline went 11-for-18.
The Pipers will look for their first win Saturday when they travel to Carleton. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
