Box Score And a freshman shall lead them.

From off the bench, no less.

Chelsey Bonsante threw in 22 points and Jordan Sammons added 15 but it was not enough to stop St. Mary's from clinching a tie for the MIAC women's basketball title with a 83-63 decision Wednesday night in Winona.

Bonsante, who is second on the team in scoring at 11.6 points per game, tossed in seven baskets (including a pair of three pointers) and made all six of her free throw attempts for Hamline (7-17 overall, 6-15 MIAC). She also had three rebounds and three steals.

But the Cardinals shot out  to a 17-8 lead in the first 5;17 of play and kept the Pipers at bay the rest of the night. SMU upped the lead to 16 but a late Piper rally halved that margin to 42-34 at intermission.

Bonsante's trey with 15:25 left made it tighter at 51-45 only to see SMU go off on a 18-4 run that put the game out of reach.

Sammons led HU in rebounds with seven. Je'Naya Brown had three steals to move into a tie for second place on the all-time list with 216.

Hamline finishes the season Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game against Concordia at Hutton Arena. Brown, the team's lone senior, will be honored before the game.
