M Hockey Remains Unbeaten In MIAC Play

1/16/2015 9:34:00 PM

Box Score The Hamline men's hockey team took a little while to get going Friday night against St. Olaf.

But it turned out to be worth the wait.

Jaycob McCombs (3) had two goals and an assist in a four-goal second period as the Pipers remained the lone unbeaten team in MIAC play with a 4-2 win over the Oles at Oscar Johnson Arena. Charlie Adams and Chad Hennum also scored for Hamline, now 2-0-3 in conference action (6-4-4 overall). John Sellie-Hanson stopped 34 shots in goal -- including 16 in the third period as the Oles pressed hard.

The Oles started fast, opening the scoring 102 seconds into the game. St. Olaf outshot the Pipers, 12-6, and carried much of the play in the period. The 1-0 score stood up until McCombs wristed a shot from the slot just under the crossbar 4:21 into the middle frame. Nine minutes later, the freshman struck again to finish off a nifty three-way play and give Hamline the lead for good.

Adams and Hennum exploded for goals 36 seconds apart late in the period to send the Pipers to the locker room with a 4-1 edge. It was Adams' fifth tally of the season. Hennum, who joined the team last week, scored his third goal in as many games played. HU controlled much of the action, finishing with a 14-6 edge in shot on goal for the 20 minutes.

Sellie-Hanson took it from there, keeping the Oles off the board until giving up a goal with a little over a minute remaining.

The teams play again Saturday in Northfield. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
