Pipers Name Four To Athletic Hall of Fame

11/5/2015 10:24:00 AM

Hamline's annual Hall of Fame inductees participated in sports which cover the spectrum of the athletic seasons.

Four individuals will be honored Saturday, November 7 at two ceremonies. The inductees will be recognized at halftime of the Hamline-Augsburg football game at Klas Field as well at a dinner that night.

Jim Hayes '94 is busy on campus these days as he prepares his men's basketball charges for the 2015-16 season. The Rochester, Minn. native (upper left) is starting his third season as head coach. He has seen his team improve its victory total in each of his first two years here. He was an outstanding player for the Pipers, winning the MIAC Sixth Man of the Year as a freshman. He went to earn a pair of All-MIAC honors and is currently in the Top Ten all-time in school history in four categories. Prior to taking the head job here, Jim was an assistant coach for the Pipers as well as stints at Carleton and St. Thomas.

Bob Kisch '59 won eight letters as a football and hockey player. On the gridiron, Bob (lower left) was a two-way player, serving as a tight end on offense and playing end on defense. As a puckster, he had a nose for the net. He was among the school's top three scorers every year he played, finishing second in the league in his senior season. That year, the Pipers finished second with the most wins the school had achieved in over a decade.

Mark Booth Severson '79 also was a two-sport athlete, winning two NCAA titles in the Discus and one in the Shot Put. Mark (lower right) was also third nationally in the latter event once, thus earning All-American status four times. He set a conference record in the Discus and was honored with the Randy Bartholomew Award as the Most Outstanding Athlete in the conference meet. He was a terrific defensive end on the football field, winning All-MIAC honors and was the league's Defensive Lineman of the Year in his senior season.

Kevin Truax '98 came out swinging and running on his first day on the baseball diamond – and continued to excel at both pursuits during a four year career that earned him numerous postseason honors.  A three time All-MIAC choice as an infielder, Kevin (upper right) was named to the All-Region team as a senior. He also was a solid pitcher, tying for the league lead in wins as a sophomore and was named the Most Valuable Player in the MIAC. In his senior year, he was the Steve Lindgren Award recipient, given annually to the top male athlete in the school.
