Hamline To Unveil Row of Honor at Klas Field Saturday

9/16/2015 10:06:00 AM

For several years, a Row of Honor for Hamline University's glorious hoop history has been in place in Hutton Arena. At halftime of this Saturday's football game between Gustavus Adolphus and Hamline, several who brought honor and glory in football and track and field will get their public due.

A new Row of Honor will adorn the north wall of Hamline's Klas Field. The Row will have the names of four coaches who made an indelible impression on Hamline's student-athletes. The 14 track and field and five football teams that have won MIAC titles will also have their own standing.

Kent Stahly handled many roles during his 35 years here. He was an assistant coach in basketball and football and served as the chairman of the Health and PE Departments. However, his biggest claim was his success molding the track and field and cross country programs. His track teams won nine MIAC titles in a row from 1974-82. He also had three cross country teams win MIAC crowns and coached numerous All-Americans.

One of Stahly's top pupils has picked up his mantle and is still here today. Paul Schmaedeke (Class of '77, pictured upper left with the 1974 MIAC Track/Field Championship team), the current head cross country and men's track coach, is one of the most respected names in the league. He has won 15 Coach of the Year honors and guided the Pipers to four cross country championships. Just last spring, HU surprised many by finishing second at the MIAC men's Outdoor Track/Field meet.

Dick Mulkern is one of the great coaches in Hamline history. In 1966, his football team ran roughshod over the MIAC, finishing first with a 6-1 mark. He won a pair of Coach of the Year crowns in his 11 years on the gridiron. Dick also coached the shot putters and discus throwers for the track teams. There, he had success as well. The Pipers had 35 All-Americans during his tenure here.

Dick Tressel spent 23 years walking up and down the football sidelines. His teams were always among the grittiest in the league. His teams won a pair of MIAC titles (1984, 1988). He was twice honored by his compatriots as Coach of the Year and was also the Sporting News D-III Coach of the Year in 1984. In addition to coaching, Dick served as the school's Athletic Director.
