Box Score Justin Quale handled the back side and
Russ Jordan took care of things up front. As a result, the Hamline men's hockey team opened MIAC play with a 4-1 victory over St. Olaf Friday night at Oscar Johnson Arena.
Quale, a sophomore goalie, was sharp all night, making 27 saves -- 24 of which came in the first 40 minutes of play. Jordan, a junior forward, had his second straight two-goal game as HU pulled away in the third period to improve their overall record to 2-0-1.
Mitch McPherson and
Jaycob McCombs also scored for HU, which ended up with a 35-28 edge in shots on goal.
The Oles (0-3-0) came out spirited, keeping Quale busy in the first 10 minutes of play with a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. McPherson opened the scoring with a power play goal at 10:33 -- the only goal of the period.
Jordan, who scored just once last season, made it 2-0 in the first minute of the middle period but the Oles responded quickly to cut the lead to 2-1. It stayed that way until McCombs cut past his man and flipped in his first goal of the year at 16:42. Jordan then put the game out of each with the team's second power play goal of the night in the third period. The Illinois native is tied with Bethel's Justin Bonnano for the early lead in goals in the MIAC with four. Hamline took control of the game there and kept the Oles away from Quale the rest of the night.
The teams will meet again Saturday in Northfield. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
