Dodds Rallies W Hockey to Best MIAC Start Ever

12/2/2016 10:17:00 PM

Box Score The HU women's hockey team continues to slay old demons. Darby Dodds scored twice in the third period to complete a rally from a two-goal deficit and lift Hamline to a 3-2 win at St. Thomas Friday night.

The dramatic win meant that:
  • Hamline is 4-0 in MIAC play for the first time ever.
  • The 6-2 overall start is also the best break from the gate in the history of the program.
  • It was the first win over St. Thomas since February 9, 2007 -- a span of 16 games (15 losses and a tie).
Dodds (5) shared the hero honors with goalie Annie Juergens, who recorded 38 saves -- 30 of which came in the first two periods of play.

Hamline trailed 2-0 in the second when Bre Simon turned the game in a new direction with an unassisted shorthanded goal at 6:21. HU remained in arrears until Dodds tied matters on a feed from Sadie Baker at 5:09 of the third period. Overtime was looming but Dodds changed that train of thought with her second of the night, finishing off a three way play with Brede Postier and Dani Perry. (Dodds and Simon are now tied for the team lead in goals with seven and points with 11.) The tension went up another notch when Hamline's Jessica Goldberg was whistled for holding with 25 seconds left in the game. But Juergens and the Pipers held firm for the win.

HU is part of a four way deadlock for the top spot in the league. The three other teams knotted in the grouping -- Augsburg, Bethel and Concordia -- have all played five MIAC games. (HU has to make up a game at St. Benedict.)

The Pipers have little time to celebrate. The teams return to the ice Saturday for a rematch at Oscar Johnson Arena. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
