M Hockey Falls in OT To Wis-Stout

1/6/2017 10:13:00 PM

Box Score For the sixth time this season, the Hamline men's hockey team went into overtime. Alas, it didn't end the way the Pipers wanted it to. Wis-Stout scored with 21 seconds remaining in the extra session to defeat Hamline, 2-1, Friday at Oscar Johnson Arena. Jake O'Borsky had the goal for HU, now 6-5-2 on the season.

It was a tight game from the start. Hamline played superb defense in the opening frame, holding the Blue Devils to just three shots on goal while returning fire with  nine in  their own right.

The game remained scoreless until 15:26 of the middle period. That is when O'Borsky took a pass from Jaycob McCombs, broke free and jammed the puck home from close range for his second goal of the season -- a tally that looked like it might be the only marker of the night for quite a while. Hamline again held an edge in shots in the period by a 15-10 margin.

The Pipers, playing their first game in four weeks, also outshot Stout in the third period by a 11-4 advantage. But the Blue Devils knotted the game at 11:51 to force the extra session. With time running out, Stout's Adam Kresl squeezed the puck past HU goalie John Sellie-Hanson from short range for the decider. Hamline ended up with a 36-22 in shots on goal but that was small consolation.

HU gets a chance to even the weekend out Saturday night at Oscar Johnson against an opponent they know -- and respect -- well. Wis-Stevens Point (10-2-2), which broke free for three third period goals in a 5-1 win at St. Olaf Friday, is ranked third in both D-III hockey polls. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
