Simon Scores Pair in W Hockey Draw

1/7/2017 5:03:00 PM

Box Score This time, the Piper women's hockey team made sure to find the back of the net. Bre Simon scored twice and Lindsey Jackman and newcomer Emily Gunderson added solos in Hamline's 4-4 overtime tie against Wis-Stevens Point in St. Cloud Saturday afternoon. HU was less than three minutes away from being victorious when the Pointers capitalized on a two-player advantage to get the equalizer. In the extra session, goalie Jaime Hathaway excelled, stopping all six shots sent her way.

After WSP opened the scoring, Simon tied the game at 1 with her eighth of the season. The Pointers went back ahead, 2-1, only to see Jackman (9) finish off a three-way play midway through the game for a second deadlock.

A last-minute goal in the second period gave the Pointers the lead entering the third frame. Simon wasted no time eliminating that edge, getting her second of the game just nine seconds into the period. Gunderson, playing just her second game, then gave Hamline its first lead of the day on a feed from Jaci Reinke at 9:27. But a pair of penalties 54 seconds apart put HU in a two-player hole and the Pointers took advantage to tie the game for the fourth -- and final -- time.

Hathaway (pictured) finished with 29 saves. In addition to the six in the extra five minute session, she had a dozen in the third period.

Hamline is now 6-5-1 overall. Their 4-1 MIAC mark is good for third place, two points behind Concordia's 5-1 standard. Ironically, the Cobbers (8-3-1 overall) are the next Hamline opponent. The teams meet twice next weekend at Oscar Johnson Arena. Friday's game is at 7:00 p.m. with the rematch set Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
