Box Score At the start of the 2017-18 Hamline men's hockey season, head coach Cory Laylin said newcomer Kyle Wendorf was a face to watch for. Fortunately for Laylin and the Pipers, St. John's wasn't paying attention Saturday night.

The freshman forward from Richfield, Minn. and junior Mitch McPherson scored two goals each in the third period to help the Pipers to a 5-2 win over the Johnnies in St. Cloud in the team's MIAC opener.

The Pipers were trailing 2-1 in the third period when Wendorf (pictured) finished off a three way play with Brady Crabtree and Taylor Trapp (who scored the first HU goal) at 1:26. Seven minutes, McPherson scored his team leading fourth tally of the year with help from Russ Jordan and Garret Schmitz to grab a 3-2 lead. Wendorf made it 4-2 with a power play marker at 15:48 and McPherson capped the rally with an empty netter with three seconds left to move HU to 3-2-0 overall and hand the Johnnies their first loss of the season.

Justin Quale handled things in the HU goal, making 29 saves.

The Pipers have one  more series before the Thanksgiving break. They play at Gustavus Adolphus on Friday, November 17 at 7:00p.m. The home opener at Oscar Johnson Arena is the next night - Saturday, November 18. Puck drop in St. Paul is at 7:15p.m.
