Women's BB Gets To Double Figures For Wins

It took a fourth quarter surge to do it but the Hamline women's basketball team is back in double figures  for victories for the first time since the 2014-15 season. Win No. 10 was a come-from-behind 60-51 decision over Macalester Wednesday night at Hutton Arena. HU also climbed to 5-6 in MIAC play, one game behind St. Benedict for the sixth -- and final -- playoff spot.

Ironically, the Bennies are their next opponent on Saturday, January 26 at Hutton Arena.

HU overcame a cold first half shooting to earn the win. Kaeli Stayer scored a game high 18 points with four steals and MIAC scoring leader Reilly Geistfeld added 17 markers with 14 rebounds. Geistfeld, who leads the league in Free Throws Made with 73, was a perfect 9-for-9 from the line. For the night, HU sank 20 of 26 attempts from the line.

The Scots led most of the first half but a late 9-0 run pushed the Pipers ahead by 24-22. Unfortunately, the visitors hit a three pointer in the waning seconds of the session for a 25-24 bulge at halftime. HU trailed 39-38 after three quarters but took the lead for good on an Alyssa Bryan-Jeffries layup with 5:43 to play. That made the score 44-43. The Pipers added five more unanswered points but the scots shot back with four to make it 49-47 with two minutes left. Sophie Findell then picked an excellent time for her only basket of the night to make it 51-47. The final nine points came from the free throw line and HU had the win.

They defeated the Bennies, 87-58, in St. Joseph in early December, CSB has turned things around and enter Saturday's game with a 6-5 MIAC mark and the same overall mark as Hamline at 10-8. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
