Leah Schwartzman set up three goals and then capped a big night with a goal as the Hamline women's hockey team kicked off 2019 in style with a 6-2 win over Saint Anselm Thursday at TRIA Rink.
The Piper power play, which leads the MIAC, connected on a pair of goals to help jumpstart the team to a 4-0 advantage midway through the game. HU kept the Hawks at bay from there to improve to 9-1-1 overall. Saint Anselm fell to 11-2-1 on the season.
Hamline didn't look rusty after a 24-day layoff.
Madison Kolbow opened the scoring at 10:59. 97 seconds later, Schwartzman (44) registered the first of three straight assists, feeding
Bre Simon for her 10th goal of the season. Before the period ended,
Jordan Hansen upped the margin to 3-0.
In the middle session, Schwartzman and
Molly Garin combined on a 4-on-3 power play for a 4-0 lead. The Hawks got on the board only to see the Pipers strike back on a goal by
Madison Gaffney. Schwartzman then finished the scoring when she completed a three way play with Simon and Hansen in the third period.
McKenna Hulslander recorded 25 saves to earn the win in goal.
The Pipers, who are undefeated in their last five games (4-0-1), are back at TRIA for a pair of games this weekend against St. Norbert's. The team face off on Saturday, January 5 and Sunday, January 6 at 2:00 p.m.
