It didn't take as long this year for the Hamline volleyball team to reach a dozen wins. Last season, HU finished with a 12-13 overall mark. On Saturday, the Pipers improved to 12-10 on the season with a split at the Hamline Triangular held at Hutton Arena. Hamline earned win No. 12 in impressive fashion, overwhelming Finlandia, 3-0. They nearly earned No. 13 a couple of hours latter, falling to Wis-River Falls by a 3-2 count.
HU -- specifically
Morgen Coleman -- came out swinging against the Lions. Coleman racked up six service aces in the first set as the Pipers bolted to a 12-0 lead en route to a 25-5 win. They followed that up with a pair of 25-09 triumphs to sweep the match. Coleman added a seventh ace (the second time she has done that).
Rachel Rettman committed just two errors, had a gamehigh 11 kils and hit .450 to lead the offense.
Megan Rubbelke added another double-double to her growing resume with 25 assists and 13 digs. Head coach
Maggie Meixl substituted liberally, using 15 players.
Things were much tighter against the Falcons. In the first set, Hamline had just two attack errors and hit .394 to earn a 25-23 win. The Falcons grabbed the second set only to see HU bounce back for a come-from-behind 25-22 win. WRF grabbed the fourth set, 25-17, and took the decider, 15-8.
Sydney Larson was the top hitter with 15 kills with
Madison Hurrle adding a dozen and Rettman chipping in with 11 more,
Maggie Gavic was a shield on the back line with a game high 26 digs to move into fifth place in the MIAC with 363. Coleman had 13 and Rubbelke, who is fifth in the loop at 9.79 assists per set, completed another double-double (her sixth straight and 14 of the season) with 14 digs. The junior now has 793 assists for the season, eighth most in school history. Coleman had another service and stands second in the conference at 0.58 service aces per set.
The Pipers, who are 2-4 in MIAC affairs, play at Carleton, Wednesday, October 23. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
