ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Hamline women's hockey team (0-1-1) tied University of Wisconsin-Superior (2-0-1) 2-2 in their home opener at TRIA Rink on Friday night.
The Pipers held on to a 1-0 lead for the majority of the game and added an empty net goal in the third period to make it 2-0. However, the Yellowjackets put together a wild comeback in the final twenty seconds of the game, scoring twice to send it into overtime. Each team took two shots in the overtime period, but it would remain a 2-2 tie as time expired.
Hamline got off to an incredibly fast start in the game, as sophomore forward
Molly Garin scored within the first thirty seconds, taking a pass from senior
Zoey Lobejko. Each picked up their first point of the season on the play.
Neither team was able to score for the remainder of the period, so Hamline went into the first break with a 1-0 lead. The Yellowjackets held an 8-7 edge in shots throughout the first frame.
In the second period, the Pipers took over offensively, holding a big 14-6 advantage in shots. None of their attempts were successful, though, and the second period passed without a change in the score.
Each team took 10 shots in the third, but it was Hamline who scored first, taking advantage of an empty net late in the period. It was first year
Taylor Stefan who put it away for the Pipers, capitalizing on a pass from senior
Bre Simon to make it 2-0. This was Stefan's first collegiate goal of her career.
The Yellowjackets rallied from here, scoring thirty seconds later (19:40) to cut the deficit in half. They added another goal with only five seconds remaining in the game to force overtime. Despite chances for both teams in the overtime, it would remain tied 2-2.
Goalkeeper
Jaela O'Brien finished the night with 24 saves to bring her season total up to 41.
Hamline is back in action tomorrow for another non-conference contest, this time hosting Concordia Wisconsin for a 12:00 p.m. game at TRIA Rink.
