The combination of solid pitching and timely hitting led the Hamline softball team a pair of victories over St. Scholastica at Dundas Sunday night in the season opener. Coach
Jim Rubbelke's team held the Saints to just seven hits on the night in recording 2-1 and 7-3 decisions.
In the opener,
Alex Molloy threw a four hitter to earn the win. The sophomore walked two and fanned four. The Pipers grabbed an early lead on a RBI double by
Ramsey Hare. The Saints tied matters in the fifth on a solo home run but HU responded in the bottom of the inning
Theresa Klinnert led off wit a double, was sacrificed to third and scored on
Lauren Sotnyk's RBI grounder.
In the second game, the Pipers grabbed control immediately, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Klinnert and
Kira Krueger (who both pitched an inning of relief) swung the big bats as each had two hits and three RBI.
Sabrina Warden started on the mound, pitched the first five innings without allowing an earned run and gained the victory.
The Pipers get back at it Monday at 11:00 a.m. in West St. Paul with a doubleheader against Wis-Stevens Point.
