There are rallies that draw some attention and then there are rallies that draw headlines.
The latter is the case here as the Hamline came off the deck to score three runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 5-4 win at Augsburg and a sweep of their MIAC doubleheader Saturday. The double dose of victory stretched the current winning streak to six games and lift the Pipers into possession of fourth place -- the last league playoff spot -- with a 11-5 conference standard.
Let's start at the beginning. The Pipers took Game 1, 2-0, as
Alex Molloy spun a three hitter with seven strikeouts. The Pipers managed only one hit but it was a big one -- a two RBI home run by
Kira Krueger in the sixth inning.
In Game 2, the Auggies grabbed a 2-0 first inning lead off Molloy. HU halved that in the fourth inning when
Delaney Kohler tripled and Molloy singled her in. Augsburg scored to make it 3-1. Molloy was in the middle of the next rally, hitting a sixth inning double that played
Riley Husom. Alas, Augsburg replied in turn and HU faced a 4-2 deficit entering their last at bat.
With one in the seventh,
Megan Rubbelke doubled. Husom singled with Rubbelke stopping at third. Kohler flied out. Molloy came through with a RBI single to make it 4-3.
Kat Armstrong then singled to plate Rubbelke. But that was the tip of the iceberg. The Auggies thought they had runners tied up on the bases but the throw to take care of this sailed into the outfield. By the time it could be retrieved, Husom and Molloy had scored, giving Hamline an improbable 5-4 lead.Â
Given new life, Molloy retired the first batter, walked the second and then induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. The sophomore now has 14 wins on the season, which ranks tied for second in the conference.Â
After a game like that, it is probably a good thing the Pipers are off for while. They get to play their final six games of the season at Meredith Field, starting with Carleton on Saturday, April 27 (1:00 p.m.). Concordia comes to town on April 28, also at 1:00 p.m. with Bethel providing the last challenge on Monday, April 29 at 3:30 p.m.
