Jake Dujmovic was the epitome of a successful multitasker for the Hamline baseball team Thursday.
The junior was on base four times (two hits, two walks) scored the eventual winning run, was flawless in the field and earned a save as the Pipers defeated Augsburg, 5-4, in a non-conference game at CHS Field. A three run seventh inning rally provided the margin of victory for HU, now 14-18 overall.
It was a game where HU coach
Jim Weyandt intended to use several players. As it developed, several faces all had a hand in the win.
There was
Tyler Brick, who launched a two-run homer to left field to give Hamline an early 2-0 lead.
Zach Branson relieved starting pitcher
Ben Resnick in the third inning and promptly tossed three scoreless frames.
The Auggies scored three times in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead. An inning later, Hamline replied with five hits, including RBI singles by
Zack Langton,
Carter Johnson and
Devin Rodgers.
Nolan Hartmann, who struck out three batters in a row in the seventh inning and was nicked for an unearned run in the eighth, picked up the win. Dujmovic, who had started the game at shortstop, quickly warmed up and took over on the mound in the ninth. He allowed one single before closing out his second save of the season.
Hamline heads back to conference play Saturday when they face St. Thomas at CHS Field. The doubleheader starts at 1:00 p.m.
