Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Sweep Puts Pipers Within One Win of Playoff Spot

It took Hamline's softball team four innings to get their offense going. Once they did get moving, Concordia simply couldn't stop them.

The Pipers swept the Cobbers,9-1 and 8-0, Sunday at Meredith Field to improve to 21-15 overall, 14-6 in the MIAC. The latter mark keeps them in fourth place, the last MIAC postseason spot. To ensure a playoff spot next weekend, HU needs to win one of two games against Bethel Monday at Meredith Field in the season finale for both teams.

In the opener, the Cobbers scraped together an unearned run off Alex Molloy in the second inning for an early 1-0 lead. The sophomore then settled in and retired the last 13 batters in a row to earn her 16th win of the season.

HU got the offense going with three fourth inning runs with Delaney Kohler and Molloy delivering RBI singles. In the fifth, Ramsey Hare's two RBI single sparkled a three run outburst. The next inning, HU took advantage and a pair of hits for three more runs to end the game on the eight run rule.  Hare's single capped the game.

In the nightcap, Hamline went to work quickly, scoring a first inning run when Kira Krueger singled, stole second, went to third on a throwing error and rolled home on a Megan Rubbelke single. The game fell  apart the next inning when the Pipers sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs. Eight straight batters got on base. Krueger, pitched the first three innings perfectly to earn the win and helped out at the plate with three hits. Rubbelke and Kohler added two each as part of a 12 hit assault.

Krueger gave way to Theresa Klinnert and Dana Rosbacka, who earn hurled a scoreless inning to complete the sweep.

Hazmline has won eight of its last nine games but now needs to win one against the Royals to guarantee themselves a playoff berth. If they win both games, they would tie St. Olaf and St. Catherine for second place and would earn the third seed for the tournament which will be held next weekend at St. Thomas' field. The Bethel doubleheader starts at 3;30 p.m.
