Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Mary-Clare Couillard

Pipers fall to #23 Gustavus in St. Peter

ST. PETER, Minn. - The Hamline women's basketball team (11-4, 6-4 MIAC) saw their seven-game win streak come to a close with a 76-65 loss to #23 Gustavus (13-3, 9-2 MIAC). This was only the Pipers' second loss on the road, as they move to 8-2 when traveling.

For the sixth time in the past seven games, senior Reilly Geistfeld compiled a double-double, this time scoring a team-high 24 points and nabbing 11 boards. The St. James native shot an efficient 64.3% (9-14) on her way to her fifth 20+ point performance, while also making four of six from the free throw line.

In the first quarter the Gusties were up seven (16-9) with 1:41 left, but the Pipers hit three free throws to make it a four-point game heading into the second. The following quarter proved to be tight, with neither team leading by more than five. A layup from senior Heather Moore gave HU a 29-28 lead, but GAC scored the last five points of the half to take a 33-29 advantage into the intermission.

Gustavus opened the second half with an 8-2 scoring run to give themselves a nine point lead at 40-31. Later in the quarter, the Pipers would go on a seven-point run of their own to get the game back within four, but that would be as close as they would get. In the fourth quarter, the Gusties scored a layup within the first 10 seconds to put them up 11, and they would hold a double-digit lead for almost the rest of the game, coming away with the 76-65 win.

Hamline was held to below a 40.0% shooting percentage in the game, while the Gusties hit 48.1% of their shots. In rebounds (29) and forced turnovers (16) the teams were the same, but Gustavus did hit eight threes compared to HU's four.

Gustavus' Ava Gonsorowski was a force for the Gusties, scoring 29 points while making eight of 11 from the floor (72.7%) while draining all three of her attempts from deep and cashing in on 10 of 12 from the line. She also had seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals to fill out her stat line.

The Pipers will play next at home, hosting #10 Bethel for a 3:00 p.m. game on Saturday, January 25.
