Fourth quarter effort helps Hamline defeat St. Olaf on the road

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Hamline women's basketball team (12-5, 7-5 MIAC) got a big win on the road on Wednesday night, using a 27-point fourth quarter to defeat St. Olaf (8-10, 5-8 MIAC) 69-63. The Pipers are now an impressive 9-2 when playing on the road.

Senior Reilly Geistfeld put up her ninth double-double of the year, scoring 21 points and nabbing 16 rebounds, both of which were game highs. Geistfeld shot 50.0% from both the floor (8-16) and from three (4-8) while also adding two assists, two blocks, and two steals to complete a well-rounded performance.

With the 21 points, Geistfeld moves up on the Hamline all-time scoring list, now sitting in seventh with 1,173 points.

Eight other Pipers contributed to the scoring in the game, with first year Lydia Lecher being the only other player to reach double figures with 13 points. Senior Kaeli Stayer did a little bit of everything for HU, compiling six assists, six points, and four steals.

Hamline had a strong first quarter, outsourcing the Oles 16-8. HU's defense held St. Olaf to only two points through the first six minutes, allowing the Pipers to take an 11-2 lead. Geistfeld and sophomore Sophie Findell led the Pipers in the quarter with six points apiece.

In the second quarter, Hamline used an eight-point run early to put them up 24-11. The Oles answered with eight straight points of their own to close the gap, making it 24-19. St. Olaf continued to work back, trailing by only two at the half, as they outscored HU 22-16 in the period. The Pipers took a 32-30 lead into the break, being led by Geistfeld's 14 points.

The Oles took over the lead three minutes into the third quarter and would lead by six with four minutes left in the frame. The Pipers scored six of the last eight points of the third, though, trailing by one (43-42) heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Pipers got off to a fast start in the fourth, going on a 12-3 run which was capped off by a three from Stayer. This would put HU up by eight (54-46) with seven minutes to go. St. Olaf was able to cut that lead to four with four minutes still to play, but Hamline would not let them get any closer, finishing strong for the 69-63 win.

The Pipers held a 20-10 advantage in points off of turnovers in the game and found a way to get to the line often, scoring 20 points on free throws, compared to St. Olaf's two.

K'Lynn Lewis paced the Oles on the night with 18 points and seven boards. Teammate Ella Skrien was next in with 12 and Keegan Mulvihill snagged 11 rebounds.

Hamline will continue this stretch of road games, next traveling to Saint Benedict on Saturday, February 1 before heading up to Concordia on February 3. HU will then return home on February 5 to take on St. Thomas.
