ST. PAUL, Minn. – In a battle between the current top two teams in the MIAC, the #9 Hamline women's hockey team (13-3-2, 9-1-1 MIAC) tied #5 Gustavus (13-2-2, 9-0-2 MIAC) 2-2 at TRIA Rink on Friday night.
Sophomore
Molly Garin had both HU goals and senior
Bre Simon assisted each goal as well. This was Garin's and Simon's seventh game this year where they had multiple points as they continue to be the top two offensive threats in the league, leading the MIAC in points (Simon with 28 and Garin with 27).
The Pipers took a penalty early in the first period, but ended up scoring shorthanded as Simon found a wide open Garin who converted on the breakaway to put HU up 1-0. This was the team's second shorthanded goal of the season, scoring another one two weekends ago against Saint Benedict. Junior
Olivia Arkell also picked up an assist on the play.
After burning off two other penalties in the period, Hamline was not so lucky the third time around, as Gustavus took advantage of the power play to even it up at one apiece.
In the second, Hamline took advantage of their first power play opportunity, as Garin scored again off a pass from Simon. Senior
Jordan Hansen was also in on the setup, recording her 14
th assist of the season. HU would take this 2-1 lead into the break.
The Pipers battled off two penalties late in the third, but Gustavus found a way to score after pulling their goalie. Their goal at 19:33 sent the game into overtime.
Hamline held a 5-0 advantage in shots in the overtime frame, but all were saved by the GAC goalie, ending the game in the 2-2 tie. Overall, HU held a 36-27 edge in shots on the night.
Sophomore goalie
Jaela O'Brien made 25 saves in net to help HU earn another MIAC point. This was the third time this season that she has made 20 or more saves.
As each team earned a point in tonight's contest, Gustavus still holds a one-point lead over Hamline for first place in the MIAC. St. Thomas defeated St. Catherine tonight, putting them only one point behind HU with 18 points.
The Pipers will get to have a rematch with the Gusties tomorrow, February 1, heading down to St. Peter for a 2:00 p.m. game.
