Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Mary-Clare Couillard

Big second quarter leads HU past Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Hamline women's basketball team (9-1, 4-3 MIAC) stretched their current win streak to five with a 70-56 win over Carleton (5-7, 2-5 MIAC) on Wednesday night in Northfield. With the win, the Pipers are now 8-1 when playing on the road.

HU used a big second quarter to put some space between themselves and the Knights, scoring a season-high 31 points in the 10 minute period. This is the most points Hamline has scored in a quarter since January of the 2015-16 season. The Pipers missed only two field goals in the quarter, shooting an incredible 84.6% (11-13) while making four of six from three.

For the second game in a row and the fourth game this season, first year Lydia Lecher led the team's scoring efforts, putting up a game-high 22 points. The St. Paul native knocked down two-thirds of her shots (10-15), while also adding three rebounds, an assist, and a steal.

Senior Reilly Geistfeld also put forth an impressive effort for HU, posting her fifth double-double of the year with 17 points and 17 rebounds. Geistfeld, who leads the Pipers in both of those categories, also paces the conference in rebounding, averaging 10.5 boards per game.

Sophomore Chan'el Anderson-Manning was the final Piper in double-digits, finishing with 11 points on four of six shooting.

Hamline scored the first six points in the game, but would see this early lead disappear as the Knights answered with seven straight points. Carleton would lead 16-12 after the first ten minutes.

At the start of the second quarter, the teams would trade points until Hamline took over, going on a 24-8 run to end the half and take a 43-32 lead into the intermission.

The Pipers held their double-digit lead for the entirety of the third quarter and scored the first four points of the fourth to put themselves up by 16. Carleton chipped away at this deficit, getting the game back within eight (62-54) with five minutes still left to play. HU was able to hold on, however, scoring the last six points of the game to win it 70-56.

Hamline recorded their best shooting percentage of the season in the contest, shooting 49% in the game, while holding the Knights to a 28.8 percentage.

Carleton had three players end with 10+ points in the game, being led by Katie Chavez's 15 points and five assists. Samantha Cooke led the Knights in rebounding with 10 boards, seven of which were offensive, while chipping in with 11 points of her own as well.

After a month of being on the road, the Pipers will return home for their next game, hosting Saint Mary's on Saturday, January 11, for a 3:00 p.m. game.
