MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - In the early hours of Saturday morning, the Hamline baseball team (0-5) took on Luther (4-0) in a doubleheader at U.S. Bank Stadium, falling in game one 4-0 and falling in game two 3-1.
GAME 1: LUTHER 4, HAMLINE 0
In game one, Hamline's pitching staff gave up only one earned run, but the Pipers were held to only three hits and had five errors to fall 4-0.
Senior
Jimmy Skroch started on the mound for HU, giving up five hits in four innings while walking three and striking out six. Only one of his four runs allowed were earned in the outing. Senior
Ben Resnick pitched the final two innings, giving up just one hit while fanning four.
The Norse got one run across in the first inning, as a single up the middle scored a runner from third, but senior
Devin Rodgers threw out the second runner trying to score, ending the inning and keeping the game within one.
In the third, the Pipers had two runners on base, as both junior
Cullen Buck and junior
Zack Langton singled in the inning, but HU was unable to get them across, leaving the game at 1-0.
Luther scored their final three runs of the game in the fourth inning, taking advantage of three Piper errors to make it 4-0.
In the fifth Hamline had two people walk, but once again were unable to score them. Sophomore
Carter Johnson got things going for the Pipers in the top of the seventh, doubling to right field, but the Norse turned a double play, helping them get out of the inning without any damage and earning the 4-0 win.
GAME 2: LUTHER 3, HAMLINE 1
Offense was hard to come by in the second game, with Hamline being held to one hit, while the Norse only recorded five.
Senior
Jake Dujmovic took the loss on the mound, giving up five fits in his 4.2 innings of work. Senior
Nolan Hartmann pitched the final 2.1 innings in relief, allowing no hits and striking out four.
Luther scored two runs in the second inning on three hits, as their rally was capped off with a single up the middle that scored runners on second and third.
In the fourth, Dujmovic singled through the left side to get the Pipers a runner, advancing to second on a ground ball and third on a wild pitch. He would be stranded on third, however, leaving the score at 2-0.
The Norse manufactured another run in the third inning, as they bunted over a runner on first and scored him on a single to left field in the next at-bat.
Hamline scored their run in the seventh when Rodgers reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error. He later reached third on a wild pitch and scored off a throwing error by the catcher, who was trying to catch him stealing. The Pipers were unable to score again, making the final 3-1.
