HU drops OT heartbreaker to Augsburg in MIAC Semifinals

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The #8 Hamline women's hockey team (18-4-4, 14-1-3) fell in the MIAC Semifinals on Saturday afternoon, as Augsburg (21-5, 15-3 MIAC) scored in overtime to claim a 2-1 win. Augsburg will now move on to face Gustavus in the MIAC Finals.

Hamline, who has spent the entire season ranked in the top-10, will now have to wait and see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament that begins on March 11.

Senior Bre Simon got the scoring going with a goal early in the first, taking on three Auggies and their goalie and beating them all to put the Pipers up 1-0 after 3:24 of play. Hamline had to burn a penalty a little while later, but did so with the lead intact, heading into the first break with a 1-0 lead.

This was Simon's 17th goal on the season and 39th point, furthering her school records in both categories.

The Auggies tied it up early in the second period, as senior Mikayla Jones took passes from McKenna Ellena and Hollywood Hermanson and found herself wide open, putting away the breakaway goal to make it 1-1. Both teams had a power play opportunity after this, but it would remain tied heading into the third with Hamline holding a 13-12 edge in shots on goal.

In the third there was a 45-second period where the Pipers were down two players, having to play five on three due to two penalties. HU fought this off, and Augsburg took a penalty, so the teams played four on four for about a minute and the Pipers got about a minute of a power play, but neither team was able to capitalize on their chances, sending the game into overtime.

The Pipers burned off a remaining penalty in the first few minutes of the overtime frame, but the Auggies would score eight minutes in, burying a loose puck, to secure the win.

Junior McKenna Hulslander finished with 21 saves in net on the day and moves to 10-2-1 on the year.
