Pipers split with UW-Stevens Point on Saturday

DUNDAS, Minn. - In their second doubleheader of the season, the Hamilne softball team (3-1) split with UW-Stevens Point (4-2), falling in the first game 4-3, but bouncing back to win the second game 3-0.

GAME 1: UW-STEVENS POINT 4, HAMLINE 3
In the first game of the night, the Pointers rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to help them to a 4-3 win over the Pipers. Hamline was outhit in the game 6-2 and had a pair of errors. Senior Blair Tommelein and sophomore Amber Peterson each had a hit for HU, with Peterson adding an RBI.

UW-Stevens Point scored first, getting a single through the left side to score a runner on third in the second inning.

The Pipers got on the board in the third, scoring two runs with two outs. Sophomore Anna O'Connor, sophomore Theresa Klinnert, and junior Megan Rubbelke all walked to load the bases. They then took advantage of a Pointer error, scoring two on a dropped ball at second that got into the outfield.

In the fourth, Hamline would add another run as Tommelein got on with a bunt single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored from second on a single to left center from Peterson.

In the sixth was when the Pointers mounted their comeback scoring three runs on three hits and a walk to take over a 4-3 lead. The Pipers prevented any more damage by turning a double play to get out of the inning. HU had two more at-bats to tie up the game, but were retired 1-2-3 in both the sixth and the seventh, leaving the final at 4-3.

Junior Alex Molloy took the loss on the mound, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out four. She is now 1-1 on the season.

GAME 2: HAMLINE 3, UW-STEVENS POINT 0
In the second game, the roles were reversed as Hamline outhit the Pointers 5-2. Senior Kira Krueger pitched a complete-game shutout for the Pipers, allowing just two hits and striking out five in the outing. Krueger is 2-0 on the year so far.

HU scored their first two runs in the fourth inning as O'Connor got the rally started with a leadoff single to center. Krueger followed that up with a double through the left side and Rubbelke was intentionally walked to load the bases. First year Gabby Cook came up with a big hit, singling to center to score Krueger and then Tommelein scored Rubbelke on a grounder to second base.

The Pipers added to their lead in the sixth as Rubbelke doubled to right center, was bunted over to third by junior Riley Husom and then scored on a ground out from Cook.

The Pointers threatened in the seventh, getting runners on second and third, but Krueger struck out the final batter to seal the 3-0 win.

Hamline will next play on their spring break trip in the middle of March, first taking on Stockton (N.J.) and Concordia (Wis.) on March 19.
