Hamline falls to Northwestern 66-51 in season-opener

ST. PAUL, Minn. - In their first game of the year, the Hamline women's basketball team (0-1) fell to the University of Northwestern (6-4) on the road by a score of 66-51.

First year Jaiden Kline led all Hamline scorers in her collegiate debut, with 15 points on the day. She also collected seven rebounds, a block, a steal, and an assist for a well-rounded performance.

Junior Sophie Findell joined Kline in double figures, scoring 10 points which included draining two threes. Teammate Gabby Robinson added nine points and sophomore Tess Hauer contributed seven off the bench.

The Pipers struggled to find their offensive rhythm in the contest, being held to shooting under 30.0%, while the Eagles shot 39.2%. Both teams were cold from three, shooting below 25%.

Northwestern was able to capitalize on 18 Hamline turnovers, scoring 19 points off of these opportunities, and found a way to get to the free throw line, scoring 22 points from the line, compared to Hamline's 12. The Pipers did shoot well from the charity stripe, making 12 of 14 (85.7%).

In the beginning of the first quarter the Eagles were able to build up a little bit of a lead, making a layup to go ahead 12-4, but Kiline hit a three and Hauer made a layup to cut that lead to five with three minutes left to play. HU would go on to tie it at 14 with 1:30 left, but UNW scored the final four points to take a 17-14 lead into the second quarter.

The Eagles would build up their lead in the second quarter, going on a 12-2 run to take a 15 point-lead and head into halftime up 39-24.

The third quarter went back-and-forth, with the Pipers outscoring the Eagles 15-13 throughout the 10 minutes. Hamline scored the first five points of the final quarter, putting themselves within nine, but that is as close as they would come, with the Eagles going on to win it 66-51.

The Pipers will be back in action on Tuesday, February 2 when they travel to Winona for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with Saint Mary's. Links for video and live stats are available on the schedule page.
