Slow second half hinders Hamline at Saint Benedict

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. - After leading by seven at halftime, the Hamline women's basketball team (0-3, 0-1 MIAC) would see Saint Benedict (2-0, 1-0 MIAC) have the stronger second half, allowing them to pull away for a 70-56 win.

For the second time in the first three games, the Pipers were led in scoring by first year Jaiden Kline, who put up 16 points on 7-12 shooting (58.3%) while also adding six rebounds and two assists. Junior Sarah Loken also ended in double figures, finishing with 11 points.

Sophomore Tess Hauer continued to provide a spark off the bench, adding nine points and both junior Gabby Robinson and first year Michaela Stamer chipped in with seven points each.

The Pipers shot very efficiently in the first half, hitting over half of their shots (51.7%) from the field while holding their opponents to a 34.5 percentage. The first quarter was a fast-paced one, with each team putting up 19 points to remain tied after the first 10 minutes.

In the second quarter, Hamline scored the first eight points to lead 27-19 with 6:30 left in the half. A three from Stamer later in the quarter would put HU up by 10 (35-25) and the Pipers would take a seven-point lead at the half, up 37-30.

The Bennies' offense would come alive in the third quarter, as they outscored Hamline 24-16. They started the half strong, scoring 10 of the first 12 points to lead by one at 6:43. From there, the quarter would remain tight with CSB taking a one-point lead into the final quarter, leading 54-53.

The Pipers' shooting went cold in the fourth, hitting only one field goal and one free throw in the last 10 minutes. The Bennies would score 16 in the final quarter to propel them to the 14-point victory.

Saint Benedict's Maddie Schmitz had an impressive performance for the Bennies, scoring 22 points on 5-7 shooting (71.4%), while also cashing in on 12 points from the free-throw line. Kate Seyer and Carla Meyer also ended in double digits, with 16 and 11 points, respectively.

Hamline will look to bounce back on Wednesday, February 10 in their first home game of the season. They will host St. Thomas for a 7:00 p.m. game. Live stat and video links are available on the schedule page.
