HU falls to Concordia in home opener

ST. PAUL, Minn. - In their first home games at Meredith Field in almost two years, the Hamline softball team (3-9, 0-6 MIAC) fell to Concordia (14-12, 2-6) 9-1 in each game of the doubleheader. The Pipers play next on the road when they head to Augsburg on Saturday before they are back at Meredith Field for a Sunday contest with Saint Benedict.

GAME 1: CONCORDIA 9, HAMLINE 1
In the first game of the series, HU was outhit 10-5 and had five errors in the 9-1 loss. Sophomore Gabby Cook was the only Piper with multiple hits with a pair of singles. Also tallying hits for Hamline was senior Megan Rubbelke, senior Theresa Klinnert, and sophomore Nayeli Pallais-Yllescas.

On the mound, senior Alex Molloy took the loss, giving up nine runs with only three of them being earned. She struck out eight in the game. For the Cobbers, senior Megan Gavin tallied the win with 11 strikeouts in her six innings pitched.

Concordia first got on the board in the second inning, using three hits to score three runs. In the sixth they would use a two-out rally to get two more across after an HU error extended the inning. The Cobbers tacked on their final four runs in the seventh, once again taking advantage of Piper errors.

The Pipers got their own rally going in the bottom of the seventh as Molloy and senior April Jacobs both got on base to start the inning. Pallais-Yllescas' single loaded the bases and Molloy would score on a groundout from first year Kiana Island. A single from Cook later in the inning would again load the bases, but Hamline was not able to capitalize, leaving the final 9-1.

GAME 2: CONCORDIA 9, HAMLINE 1
In game two, Hamline's six hits were spread out between six different batters. Rubbelke and Klinnert each recorded their second hit of the day, and were joined by Jacobs, junior Amber Peterson, senior Cora Stallcup, and junior Dana Rosbacka.

The Cobbers once again outhit the Pipers, this time by a margin of 12-6. Concordia also showed off their power hitting in the game, with three home runs throughout the seven innings.

Klinnert would take the loss on the mound, pitching all seven innings while giving up nine runs (six earned) on 12 hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Concordia's Tori Herrboldt earned the win for the Cobbers with eight strikeouts in the game.

A two-run homer in the second put the Cobbers ahead 2-0 early, and they would add another run in the third on an HU fielding error. They would get their fourth run in the fifth inning, which was also unearned.

Hamline would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth, as Rubbelke doubled, advanced to third on a single from Klinnert, and was driven in on a sacrifice fly from Molloy.

A five-run seventh inning for the Cobbers, put the game out of reach for the Pipers. With the 9-1 win, Concordia secured the sweep. This was the first time that the Cobbers had earned a win against the Pipers since the 2016 season.
