ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Hamline softball team (4-12, 1-9 MIAC) had trouble getting their offense going against #16 Saint Benedict (17-5, 9-3 MIAC) on Sunday afternoon, falling 8-0 and 2-0 at Meredith Field. The Pipers were held to just one hit on the day, as senior
Cora Stallcup singled in the third inning of game two.
HU will look to bounce back on Wednesday, hosting St. Olaf for a pair of games starting at 3:30 p.m.
GAME 1: SAINT BENEDICT 8, HAMLINE 0 (5 INNINGS)
The Bennies used 12 hits in game one to get an 8-0 run-rule victory over the Pipers. Senior
Theresa Klinnert was the only HU batter to reach base in the game, being hit by a pitch in the fifth inning.
The Bennies scored first in the second inning, getting one across on a single to right field. A walk and three hits in the third put CSB ahead 4-0. An RBI-single and a three-run homer in the fourth would make it 8-0, and after holding the Pipers it would secure the five-inning win.
Junior
Dana Rosbacka started on the mound for Hamline, pitching the first 2.2 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out three. Klinnert would close out the game, pitching the final 2.1 innings, also giving up four runs.
CSB pitcher Elly Novak threw a no-hitter in the game, striking out 13 of the possible 15 outs.
GAME 2: SAINT BENEDICT 2, HAMLINE 0
The Pipers battled in the second game, as senior pitcher
Alex Molloy and the HU defense held the Bennies to only two runs throughout the seven innings. Despite having more baserunners in the second game than the first, Hamline was unable to capitalize, allowing Saint Ben's to go home with a sweep.
HU had a baserunner in the second when Klinnert walked and another in the fifth when Stallcup singled, but neither would be able to score. The Pipers had their best chance of the game in the fourth when sophomore
Gabby Cook and senior
Megan Rubbelke walked.
Abby White would come in to pinch run for Cook, and would get to third on a fly out from Klinnert, but would be unable to score.
The Bennies broke the tie in the fourth when their leadoff batter got on, stole second, and was driven in by another hit. They would use the same formula in the seventh, making the final 2-0.
Molly gave up seven hits in the outing, walking just one and striking out six. For CSB, Novak would earn another win, pitching the first four innings.
