ST. PAUL, Minn. - In their first MIAC contest of the season, the Hamline baseball team (2-8, 0-1 MIAC) fell to Concordia (6-3, 1-0 MIAC) 9-0 at CHS Field. The Cobbers compiled 16 hits in the game, while the Piper bats were held to just three hits on the day.
First years
Braeden Bourne and
Mac Enlow each had a hit for HU, along with senior
Colton Peters. Junior
Will Tzavaras started on the mound for the Pipers, pitching the first five innings. He would take the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits. First year
Elijah Erickson and sophomore
Hayden Ring each pitched multiple innings in relief.
The Cobbers struck first in the second inning, using back-to-back two-out doubles to get a run across. They then drew two walks to load the bases, but Tzavaras got out of the jam with a fly out to center field. Concordia would add four more hits in the following inning to score three more runs, and after holding the Pipers in the bottom of the inning, would take a 4-0 lead into the fourth.
Concordia would threaten in each of the next two innings, leaving two runners on in the fourth and the fifth. An impressive running catch from sophomore
Ian Sandbo in right field in the fifth saved two runs, keeping the score 4-0.
The Pipers got their first baserunners in the fifth, as first year
Matt Rusch reached on a hard-hit ball to third base and first year
Mac Enlow followed that up with a single. First year
Colin Schuetz was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. The Cobbers were able to get out of the inning without any damage, however, getting a groundout to third base to end the inning.
The Cobbers would tack on another run in the sixth and use three hits and two walks in the seventh to get three more, making it 8-0 after seven complete. Concordia would get a final run in the eighth inning, making the final 9-0.
The Pipers get right back to it tomorrow, April 3, heading to Moorhead for a doubleheader against the Cobbers. The first game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
