ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Hamline baseball team (10-14, 5-6 MIAC) defeated Augsburg (7-19, 5-13) 6-0 on Sunday afternoon, propelling them to a series win over the Auggies, two games to one.
HU outhit Augsburg 9-6 in the game, as first years
Mac Enlow,
Matt Rusch, and
Braeden Bourne all had two hits apiece. Junior
Cullen Buck drove in two runs and six different players scored in the win.
The Pipers struck first in the game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Senior
Zack Langton got himself into scoring position by stealing second base. Bourne then drove him in hitting a hard grounder down the left field line. First year
Gavin Renwick then came up with a big two-out hit, singling to right field to score Bourne, giving HU a 2-0 lead.
The Auggies had the bases loaded in both the third and fifth innings, but Hamline starter
Ryan Conn found a way to get out of both jams to preserve the lead. In both innings, Conn recorded a pitcher to catcher to first double play before getting the final out on a groundout in the third and a fly out in the fifth.
Hamline tacked on two more runs in the seventh. Renwick walked and first year
Tyler Johnson reached on a fielder's choice and both would score when Buck singled to right field. This gave HU some extra insurance heading into the final two innings with a four-run lead.
HU would add two more runs in the eighth, as first year
Colin Schuetz opened the inning with a triple and would score on a single from Rusch.
Dylan Barganz came in to pinch run for Rusch and would take two bases on an Augsburg error and score on a balk to make it 6-0.
Conn gave the Pipers a solid start, going the first five innings. He allowed no runs on four hits and would earn the win. Sophomore
Hayden Ring and sophomore
Jonah Smallfield each pitched two scoreless innings in relief, each striking out two batters.
The Pipers will get right back into it on Tuesday, hosting Saint Mary's to CHS Field for a doubleheader at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
