NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Hamline softball team (5-15, 2-12 MIAC) picked up a conference win this afternoon in a split with Carleton in Northfield. The Pipers totaled 16 hits throughout the pair of games, with nine hits in game one and seven in game two.
Â
Senior
Alex Molloy, senior
Cora Stallcup, and junior
Theresa Klinnert had three hits on the day, pacing the HU offense. Klinnert also tallied a win on the mound, pitching all seven innings in game one, allowing just one run in the outing while striking out six.
Â
GAME 1: HAMLINE 8, CARLETON 1
In addition to the Pipers' nine hits, HU was able to take advantage of seven Carleton errors and four walks to help them earn the 8-1 win. Eight different Pipers tallied a hit in the game, as senior
April Jacobs led the way with two.
Â
The Pipers applied some early pressure in the game, scoring three runs in both the first and second innings. In the first, Klinnert doubled to score both
Amber Peterson and
Nayeli Pallais-Yllescas. Klinnert would later score on a fielder's choice from Molloy, making it 3-0.
Â
In the second, Stallcup started the inning with a single and would eventually score on a groundout from Pallais-Yllescas. A Carleton error later in the inning allowed two more runs to score, making it 6-0.
Â
Both teams scored once in the third. Hamline got their run from first year
Alison Kimball who singled and eventually scored on a throwing error from the Knights. Carleton strung together three hits to get their run across, but Klinnert struck out the final batter of the inning to leave the bases loaded and keep the Pipers ahead 7-1.
Â
The final Hamline run came from sophomore
Gabby Cook's first career home run. This would make it 8-1, which it would stay for the final three and a half innings.
Â
With the win on the mound, Klinnert improves to 3-6 on the year.
Â
GAME 2: CARLETON 12, HAMLINE 4 (5 INNINGS)
Carleton's bats really came alive in the second game, as they held a 15-7 edge in hits in the contest. For Hamline, Klinnert, Molloy, and Stallcup all had two hits apiece, accounting for six of the team's seven hits.
Â
Just like in game one, the Pipers got on the board right away in the top of the first inning, as Klinnert doubled to score Cook, and Molloy doubled to score Klinnert. However, this time the Knights answered right away in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs on four hits and three walks.
Â
Carleton would get three more runs in the second, using three hits and an HU error to take a 7-2 lead. The damage could have been worse, but Jacobs turned a double play to help Hamline get out of the inning.
Â
The Pipers got two of those runs back in the third, using three hits and a sacrifice fly to make it 7-4. Two hits and a sac fly for the Knights in the bottom of the inning, made it 8-4, and in the fourth, they would rally to score four more runs to extend their lead to 12-4. HU was unable to score in the top of the fifth, ending the game early because of the eight-run deficit.
Â
Klinnert started on the mound for the Pipers in game two as well, giving up five runs in one inning of work, taking the loss. Junior
Dana Rosbacka pitched the final inning, giving up the final seven runs.
Â
HU will play again tomorrow, heading down to St. Peter to take on Gustavus at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.
