ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - There was plenty of offense in Hamline baseball's (4-10, 2-3 MIAC) MIAC doubleheader with Bethel (11-5, 5-1 MIAC) on Friday afternoon, with the Pipers winning game one 7-3, but dropping game two 13-4. Between the two games, the teams combined for 36 hits, with HU getting 12 of their 16 hits on the day in the first game.Â
Â
Hamline will continue MIAC play this weekend, welcoming Gustavus to CHS Field on Saturday, April 10. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. As a reminder for fans, the gates will open 30 minutes prior to the start of the game. The Pipers will then head down to St. Peter on Sunday for a single nine inning game.
Â
GAME 1: HAMLINE 7, BETHEL 4
The Hamline offense had an impressive showing in game one, tallying 12 hits and four home runs on their way to a 7-3 win.
Â
Junior
Will Tzavaras had a solid outing on the mound for the Pipers, securing his second win of the season. He went five innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits while walking three and striking out two. Sophomore
Braden Schneider finished out the game for HU, giving up just one hit in his two innings pitched.
Â
The defense played well behind the pitching staff, playing errorless in the contest. Some of the defensive highlights included a 4-6-3 double play, a sliding catch in left field from first year
Colin Schuetz, and a leaping grab from junior
Cullen Buck stealing a line drive hit from Bethel.
Â
First year
Mac Enlow had a massive game for Hamline, going 3-4 with two home runs while driving in four runs. Buck also had multiple hits for HU, going 2-4 with a single and a home run, his first of the year.
Â
Enlow helped the Pipers score first in the game, hitting a solo shot over the left field fence in the second. HU was able to get one more run across before the inning was over, using singles from first year
Gavin Renwick, sophomore
Owen Christenson, and sophomore
Stephen Schmidt to make it 2-0.
Â
Buck hit his home run in the third inning, hitting a long drive over the right centerfield fence. The Pipers had three more hits in the inning, but were unable to do any more damage, leaving the score at 3-0.
Â
Bethel answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, as the first two batters got on base and would score on a passed ball and a groundout later in the inning.
Â
In the fifth, Enlow again delivered for the offense, hitting a three-run home run this time, as Buck and senior
Zack Langton reached base earlier in the inning. That would give HU some breathing room, making it 6-2.
Â
The Royals would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth, as a double scored a runner from first.
Â
Schuetz would hit the Pipers' fourth homer of the day in the sixth, hitting one to left field to make it 7-3. Schneider and the Piper defense would take care of the rest, allowing only one runner on to help HU to the game one victory.
Â
GAME 2: BETHEL 13, HAMLINE 4
The second game, which featured two separate weather delays, ended up getting away from the Pipers, as Bethel recorded 14 hits, six walks, and three hit-by-pitches and capitalized on two Hamline errors to score 13 runs, coming away with a 13-4 decision.
Â
Buck had another steady game at the plate, going 2-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Senior
Colton Peters added two hits (and an RBI) and reached on a walk in the game and sophomore
Logan Tollefson came up with an RBI single in his pinch-hit appearance.
Â
The Pipers got two of their runs in the first inning, taking advantage of two Bethel errors. Buck drove in the first run with a double down the right field line and then Buck would eventually score when he stole home.
The Royals also scored in the first, and would add two more runs in the third, as a Piper error extended the inning. This made it 3-1 after three complete innings.
Â
Bethel exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning, using four hits and three walks to extend their lead to 10-2. One of those hits was a grand slam, but five of the inning's seven runs for BU were unearned, as the inning once again went long because of a Piper error.
Â
HU got a rally going in the sixth, with three hits and walk that led to two runs, but the Royals answered right back with three more runs on four hits to make it 13-4, which it would remain for the rest of the game.
Â
First year
Elijah Erickson started on the mound for the Pipers, pitching the first two innings, giving up one run on three hits.
Jonah Smallfield was next to come in and would take the loss, giving up two runs (neither earned) on two hits.
Max Gerstner,
Taylor Just,
Josh Cary, and
Spencer Klika all pitched innings in relief for HU.
