ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Hamline softball team (6-18, 3-15 MIAC) hosted Macalester (7-13, 7-13 MIAC) on Saturday afternoon, winning game one 4-1 before falling in game two 1-0. The Pipers used the doubleheader as an opportunity to celebrate their five senior players -
April Jacobs,
Alex Molloy,
Anna O'Connor,
Cora Stallcup, and
Megan Rubbelke - for all they have done for the program over the past four years.
Â
GAME 1: HAMLINE 4, MACALESTER 1
Each team tallied six hits in the first game, but the Pipers held a 5-0 edge in walks on the day, which helped them to the 4-1 win. HU's six hits were spread between six different batters, but Molloy led the way in RBIs, with two in the game.
Â
Junior
Theresa Klinnert, in addition to driving in a run, also pitched all seven innings, giving up just one run on six hits while striking out five and walking none. With the win, Klinnert moves to 4-8 on the season.
Â
After retiring the Scots in order in the first inning, Klinnert hit a single to left field to drive in teammate
Amber Peterson, who had walked and stole second to get herself into scoring position.
Â
Despite a double in the second from first year
Kiana Island, the Pipers weren't able to score again until the third inning when Rubbelke and sophomore
Gabby Cook singled and were eventually driven in by a single from Molloy. This made it 3-0 in favor of HU.
Â
In the fifth, sophomore
Nayeli Pallais-Yllescas would score for Hamline. She singled with two outs, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on another wild pitch, extending HU's lead to 4-0.
Â
The Scots would get their run in the sixth, using a triple and a single to make it 4-1. Klinnert and the Piper defense held tight, however, not allowing any more runs to cross, securing the 4-1 win.
Â
GAME 2: MACALESTER 1, HAMLINE 0
In game two, Hamline and Macalester once again matched each other in hits with five, but it was the Scots who would be able to plate a run to claim a split with a 1-0 game-two decision.
Â
Molloy had two of those hits for HU, with Rubbelke, Island, and Jacobs recording a hit apiece for the offense.
Â
Junior
Dana Rosbacka pitched well for Hamline in the game, pitching all seven innings, giving up the one run on five hits while walking none.
Â
Hamline had some early chances, as Rubbelke, Molloy, and Jacobs all singled within the first two innings, but they were not able to get a run across. In the third, HU once again had two runners on, but the Scots were able to get the final two outs of the inning to keep the game scoreless.
Â
Macalester got their run in the sixth, as a leadoff single came around to score on a single to left field later in the inning.
Â
The Pipers threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh as Pallais-Yllescas walked and advanced to third on double from Island. The Scots turned a double play to end the rally, however, escaping with the 1-0 win.
Â
HU is back at it tomorrow, hosting St. Catherine to Meredith Field for games at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Please note the schedule change, as the games were originally scheduled to be played at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
