HU earns walk-off win over Carleton on Friday night

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Hamline baseball team (11-21, 6-13 MIAC) earned an exciting walk-off win on Friday night, defeating Carleton (4-19, 2-19 MIAC) 3-2 after scoring two runs in the eighth and one run in the ninth to complete the comeback.

First year Colin Schuetz would drive in the winning run, but there were plenty of notable performances in the win for the Pipers.

Junior pitcher Will Tzavaras gave HU 8.2 innings of work, allowing just one earned run in the start. First year Jonah Smallfield would pick up the win after getting the final out for Hamline in the ninth, improving to 2-3 on the year.

Carleton would outhit the Pipers 10-6 in the game, with three of those hits coming from bunt singles. All of Hamline's hits would come from different players, with Cullen Buck, Zack Langton, Logan Tollefson, Ian Sandbo, Braeden Bourne, and Schuetz each tallying a hit on the day.

The Knights would score in the third inning, using two singles and a Piper error to score two runs. The Pipers had a chance to get some runs back in the fifth when Tollefson doubled and Sandbo walked, but HU would leave runners on second and third, allowing Carleton to keep their 2-0 lead.

HU got important defensive stops in both the fourth and the fifth innings, keeping the game within reach. In the fourth, the Knights had two runners on with only one out, but Tzavaras struck out a Carleton batter and forced a groundout to get out of the inning. In the fifth, Carleton would have the bases loaded, but Buck and Bourne would turn a double play to prevent any runs from crossing.

The Pipers tied the game up at two in the bottom of the eighth. Bourne started off the inning with a double to deep left field. This was followed up by a walk for sophomore Owen Christenson. A wild pitch got them over to second and third. Buck drove in Bourne on a groundout to the first baseman and Max Gerstner (who pinch ran for Christenson) scored on a sacrifice fly from first year Mac Enlow.

The Knights threatened to score in the ninth, leading off with a single to center field. Tzavaras and Smallfield would work out of it, though, keeping the game tied.

In the ninth, Langton started the inning with a single. Schuetz followed that up with a triple to left center field, allowing Langton to go first to home to lift the Pipers to victory.

Hamline will take on Carleton again this weekend, heading to Northfield on Sunday for a doubleheader with the Knights beginning at 1:00 p.m.
