MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.—The Hamline University baseball team squared-off against Minnesota Morris (DH) in a Saturday-morning bout at US Bank Stadium. A pair of late-game runs pushed the Cougars to a 2-1 (7 innings) victory in game one, before the Pipers bounced back with a 5-0 (7 innings) win in game two.
The Pipers ended the day with a 5-9 overall record, while the split sent Morris to 7-6 on the season.
Minnesota Morris 2, Hamline 1 (Game One)
The first inning saw Mac Enlow, Owen Christenson, and Finn Melchior each register two-out singles. This resulted in Enlow's run, which gave Hamline a 1-0 lead that lasted until Morris's two-run sixth inning that gave them a 2-1 victory.
Each team finished the game with five hits. Conor Mestemacher allowed just three hits over five innings of pitching work for Hamline, while Braden Schneider was tagged with the loss in the sixth inning.
Hamline 5, Minnesota Morris 0 (Game Two)
Cullen Buck led off the first inning with a single, and moved to scoring position with a stolen base before Max Gerstner knocked him in with a double to make things 1-0. Gerstner stole third, and touched home plate off Tyler Johnson's sacrifice fly to widen the margin to 2-0.
The second frame was all Braeden Bourne, who singled, stole a pair of bases, and scored on a muffed pick off attempt to make the score 3-0. Gerstner duplicated Bourne's second inning, but scored from third base off Finn Melchior's single to put the score at 4-0.
The fifth inning saw Gerstner make the score 5-0 when he singled, stole second base, and scored on Enlow's single.
Ryan Conn picked up the pitching win for Hamline, as he gave up five hits over 5 1/3 innings before Jonah Smallfield allowed no hits throughout the final 1 2/3 innings.
Gerstner went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three stolen bases for the Pipers.
Hamline will open MIAC play against Gustavus Adolphus (DH) at CHS Field on Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m.
